“What flavor?” He eased back from her, let his hands drift across her collar to her shoulders, his fingers hooking in the shoulder straps of her light dress.

“I did,” she said.
“I hope you had fun.”

“I knew you would. And they all loved your preserves.”
“That’s good,” she sighed, huffed in a few breaths, then yawned.
“Night-night, little Lily,” he said, then moved to turn out the lamp.
But as he reached back to pull the chain, Lily said, “Daddy?”
“Yes, baby?”
Then she said no more, her smooth brow furrowed and contemplative, her mouth working around.
“You can say it, Lily.”
“Are they...”
When she said no more again, too timid, he said, “Are they what, baby?”
Lily’s head turned toward him on the pillow, her beautiful face tightened with worry. “Are they... Are they doing bad things?”
“Who’s they, baby?” He brushed his knuckles on her soft cheek.
She swallowed, then whispered, “Everybody.”
He said, “What makes you say that?”
She shrugged and rolled her head back to look up at the ceiling. “Everybody’s being weird.” Her voice was small and quiet.
He watched her a moment, then said, “They are.”
Lily looked back, eyes wide with shock. “You think they’re doing bad things?”
He tapped the pad of his index finger on his wife’s plump lower lip, and she giggled and squirmed away. He said, “I think that’s grown up talk, Lily.”
Lily pouted. “Okay,” she said, a little surly.
He pulled the lamp’s chain and put the room dark, then folded against his wife’s back again. He whispered to her, “It’s grown-up stuff, baby. I’ll tell you sometime when you’re bigger.”
“Will you tell me tomorrow?”
“I promise I’ll tell you when you’re ready.”
A little fearful, Lily said, “Is it bad?”
He thought about what to say, then thought he shouldn’t hide the truth from his little girl. “It’s terrible,” he said.
Lily shivered, and he hugged her protectively. She whispered, “Keep me safe, okay?”
“I promise,” he said, and kissed her ear one more time before they fell asleep together.
