0010 - Bart’s Conscience

You probably should have seen this coming.Aren't cartoons great? It's easy to dismiss them as wacky children's entertainment, but as a medium, being able to use visual metaphors in this way rules. I'll tell you this: you're not getting a little angel and devil to represent a character's internal moral dilemma in stuff like The Sopranos. As a storytelling tool, I just think this sort of thing is neat, and we take it for granted.I'm not doing Maggie's conscience. This post is part of my "Every Simpsons Character ...

David Cooper post 0009 - Lisa’s Conscience from patreon

0009 - Lisa’s Conscience

Yes, I admit we're going to some weird places here.We can debate all day and all night whether the little angel and devil that appear on a character's shoulder exist as a complete and separate character to the actual original character. So let's!What's that you say? They don't 'exist'? Well I got news for you buster: neither does Lisa. Is Lisa's conscience, that appears to tell her not to take money from the titular money jar, not worthy of some scrutiny here? But aren't they just an extension of Lisa herself?...

David Cooper post 0008 - Abe Simpson from patreon

0008 - Abe Simpson

It felt a little wrong going through the main family without covering Abe! But thankfully he arrives pretty early on, more or less fully formed. There's a joke in "The Simpsons 138th Episode Spectacular" that none of the characters in the shorts look how they're supposed to look, but honestly Abe is largely unchanged. He comes across as a little more aware of things that we're used to in "Grandpa and the Kids" but he's basically the Grandpa we know and love.Abe is obviously used most often as the show's opport...

David Cooper post 0007 - Jake the Barber from patreon

0007 - Jake the Barber

Here's a strange one! Recognisable but definitely not a household name. Did you even know his name was Jake? Pretty sure I didn't.Jake shows up every now and again (how often does a plot require a barber? Not often) but in my opinion features most prominently in "22 Short Films About Springfield", where he attempts to fix Lisa's hair. In "Bart's Haircut" he is actually a lot younger seeming that seems later, but I've chosen to portray him in his more well-known classic appearance. Could he be...a Simpsons cha...

A couple of little extra promo piece things.

Instead of doing my regular paid work, I decided to whip up a couple of promo images for the Patreon Infigured I’d show them to you lovely people before I put them out in the world!

David Cooper post 0006 - Funeral Director from patreon

0006 - Funeral Director

Now we’re getting somewhere. One of the main things about this project that interested me was delving into these one-off weirdos. Everyone knows Flanders or Hibbert or Moleman or even Hugh Jass but only the nerdiest of nerds are gonna know “Funeral Director”.The guys only appears in one shot, and I had to make up like 75% of his appearance:This was back when a Simpsons plot could be “they go to a funeral.” Complex stuff!Buckle up, because we’ve got a lot of these nobobies to come. I hope you love them all as much as I’m growing to....

We made it…through the title of the show.

Just wanted to say thank you, you lovely people. We have a lot of ground to cover, but I’m feeling good about it.Look forward to everyone’s favourite character*, coming on Monday!* not really

0005 - Maggie Simpson

I'm not gonna lie: I thought I was gonna have to break a rule to squeeze famously mute Maggie in this week.As part of the sacred rules, I established that a character needs a line to be included in the official count. And as we all know, Maggie's first words aren't until season 4, episode 10's "Lisa's First Word", voiced by Elizabeth Taylor.BUT NO! If you watch "Good Night", you'll find the last noise as everyone falls asleep is Maggie babbling something resembling a word. So she gets in just under the wi...

A5 print WIP preview maybe!

Tonight I’ve been working on what might be the very first exclusive A5 print for the Robo-Ninja-Agent-Force! Still some work to do, but let me know what you think!

0004 - Lisa Simpson

Listen, I'm not gonna tell you Lisa is the main character of The Simpsons. But I do think she represents the often cynical perspective of the show as a whole. Not as a character unto herself, of course! Lisa is bright and hopeful, never letting the weight of this terrible world defeat her completely. But the world does try to defeat her. Through her we learn one of the show's themes again and again - that intelligence and compassion will be challenged at every turn, and usually there is no reward for either.(The way I'm describing th...

David Cooper post 0003 - Marge Simpson from patreon

0003 - Marge Simpson

My appreciation for Marge Simpson grows more with every year. She's not big or flashy, but she's such a unique sitcom character that I can't help but be in awe of how she's often used.It takes a special alchemy to take what the show often presents as a "boring" character and use that effectively - and hilariously - over such a long period. Usually, when "boring" is used as a comedic tool, it's fairly one note. A "boring" character in a sitcom will show up for one episode, then exit swiftly to our regu...

Doodle - Zack Snyder’s Hostess Fruit Pies

In addition to my Simpsons illustrations, I’ll be posting early and exclusive pieces here for you wonderful Patrons! Here‘s a silly idea I had this morning.(Don’t get mad at me if you like these movies. Love what you love. They’re not for me.)

0002 - "Bart Simpson"

Oh, so THAT's who the son from yesterday was!It can be argued that Bart is the main character of The Simpsons. Look, I swear I'm not going to say that for every character, but it's true! Bart was certainly the gateway character for many of the target young audience in the 1990s, and the so called "Bartmania" that ensued is evidence of this. For me, Bart was aspirational in all the wrong ways. I was a good boy, a well behaved wimp, really more of a Milhouse or even a Martin. But I wished I had the confidence to be a Bart, to o...

0001 - "Homer Simpson"

Well, of course Homer is first. Many Simpsons fans will be familiar with the short "Good Night", as it is played in "The Simpsons 138th Episode Spectacular" from season 7. That episode was where I (and presumably many fans) learned of the existence of these shorts. Almost inevitably, Homer is the first to speak in this short as he tucks his son* into bed, a scene that seems so out of place to anyone who has watched how he treats his son in the intervening 30+ years. It can be argued that Homer is the main character of The Simpsons...

Every Simpsons Character Ever...Introduction

Welcome!Let's get to business: I'm starting a project in which I draw every Simpsons character ever. I'm guessing that's why you're here! Thanks for taking an interest in what I admit is an insanely ambitious undertaking.I've been exploring the world of The Simpsons a lot this year, with my comic Lenny and my upcoming zine Eye on Springfield, and I've been having so much fun rendering these characters in my style, so I thought why not keep the ball rolling and draw as many of these beloved (and many unfamiliar) chara...
