From Techno-Libertarianism to Eco-Fascism
Early internet subcultures used to be a haven for individualists and techies. But social media has become a hotbed for groupthink and reactionary cults. Surprisingly, many of these communities are comprised of the same people. From New Atheist to TradCath; how 2013’s seasteading programmers became 2019’s blood-and-soil peasants. In the past few years there has been a radical transformation within internet subcultures. For many of us who grew up online – as nerds, gamers, or introverted creatives – the internet was a place you could go to...

"Proof of Body"
I wrote the unthinkable (but true) take for the new issue of Document Journal. Read the piece online alongside a beautiful series of photographs by Bobby Doherty.***I’ve spent the last year exploring “extremely online nutrition”: lifting weights, eating raw eggs, and sunning my balls to better understand how social media has fragmented consensus reality. Cultural divisions now seem deeper than ever, and society no longer agrees on the basic principles of political freedom or even empirical science. From conflicting narratives around the C...
Literally every link from the Twitch stream in 2022
In the last few years, I've published a syllabus of reading, watching and listening material ~every semester or so. These reading lists represent the accumulated knowledge of 10 years at the intersection of art & tech, alongside current threads of research.2020 Fall • 2021 Fall • 2022 Spring • 2022 SummerIt's often disappointing to explore long form academic content, so I find that compressed lists (such as these) are really valuable and rewarding for the time spent. It takes a lot of digging to uncover the best links. In the spiri...

Reflections on Berlin Art Week 2022

There's a noticeable trend among the artists and themes present in this year's program that has got me thinking about creative generations and the impact of social media platforms over the last decade. First, let's take a look at some of the exhibitions opening this week:Oliver Laric, "Exoskeleton" at Tanya LeightonKatja Novitskova, "Soft Approximations" at Kraup...

Soros Centers for Contemporary Art w/ Aaron Moulton
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, an estimated 24 million dollars helped to fund 20 newly established art centers throughout eastern Europe. The SCCA mission was to archive “unofficial art” (works that were previously unrecognized by the authoritarian state) and to cultivate a new form of avant garde contemporary art with curious political overtones.Follow Aaron:https://www.instagram.com/aaronkmoulton/Blue Pill Press Release:https://www.instagram.com/p/CejWkqTJmOB/Red Pill Press Release:https://www.instagram.com/p/Cejmhdkv-_n/Voices o...
