Warmup Sketches
Swords, ladies, houses, and ruins. All the artistic essentials.
Dark Science #71 - The Cavalry
Holy smokes, what's the gang going to do now?
Concept Art - Congruity Vehicles
The Dragoons came together fairly quickly, though I went through a few variations of the Carriers. Eventually I settled on the bottom right design (which will be more visible in upcoming pages).Fun fact: all Department of Congruity land vehicles are aesthetic variations on a 1930 KJ Henderson Custom motorcycle, while the air vehicles like the Carriers are based on locomotives designed by Raymond Loewy in the 1930s.
Concept Art - Congruity Officers
Originally I had Amon Harthrow wearing armor for their assault on the Kusanagi home, but decided it was excessive. Instead I just went with a cape, and prefer to believe it's not standard-issue and that he brought it from home to look important.

Beijing Sketch Diary #2
Training began each morning in the park of Tian Tan, the Temple of Heaven. It's a massive complex with tons of little corners and forests where some of the top martial artists in Beijing train. During the Cultural Revolution, kung fu was essentially banned, but many masters trained in secret around the ruins of Tian Tan. The temple has been renovated in recent years, and as such has become a symbolic hub for many traditional practices.Above: Morning practice began with Ni Rou Hua, a 6th generation master of Cheng-style Bagua. Since Bagua in...
Beijing Sketch Diary #1
Last month I was fortunate enough to go on an extended martial arts trip in Beijing, training under several top masters of Baguazhang. If you're unfamiliar with Baguazhang (Bagua for short), it's the style that Airbending is based on in Avatar and Korra. I've been doing martial arts since I was six, but I've only been practicing Bagua for three or so years. This excursion was an eye-opener to say the least, for both my physical training and understanding of Chinese culture. These installments will cover interesting places and mom...
Dark Science #68 - Problem Solving
http://dresdencodak.com/2016/09/26/dark-science-68-problem-solving/I'm back! I'll be chronicling my China adventures in sketch form shortly, but now it’s back to our regularly scheduled comic. Those gals seem to be in quite a pickle!
Dark Science #68 - Pencils
Here are the pencils for the upcoming page of Dark Science. There's something a bit different in store for you all this month. #68 will likely be the only page of Dark Science posted as I'm traveling to China for martial arts training. In lieu of the next page for this month, I'll post Patreon-exclusive travel sketches. Hopefully this will be a fun and unique detour.

"Law Enforcement"
Dark Science #67 Pencils
As most of you probably know, most of Dark Science is written ages in advance, but now and again I’ll rewrite or tweak things once I get close to drawing a page. This page went through several versions this month, as my portrayal of law enforcement in Nephilopolis ended up coming way to close to America’s police violence epidemic we’re currently dealing with. Essentially, it got a little too serious and felt explicitly topical. Here I reworked a few things, specifically making Amon a bit more outrageous, so as to maintain the satire I was...
