#LETSDRAWMONSTERS: The Carnivorous Coniferous
Today we are drawing a creature that disguises itself as a pine tree, and awakes in the night to cause mischief and terror on Christmas!PROMPT:Beware the Carnivorous Coniferous! When winter comes, and you venture into the snow-laden pines for this year's yuletide tree; you may find one there, which looks the very best, but be ye warned; for it is quite unlike the rest.If you fell it, and set it upon your hearth, all bedecked and spangled in Holiday cheer,be wary of midnight! For it is no fine fir tree, but something instead to fill your night...

"The Dungeon Keeper" Monster of the Month
Today I have a surprise Bonus Monster for you! Meet the Dungeon Keeper! (Because you can't have a dungeon without a dungeon keeper!) He's a design that I have been tinkering with off and on for months now, trying different approaches and ideas, but never quite nailing. He originally had skulls instead of keys, but it just seemed like too much; he also had horns, but that seemed over the top as well. I kept trying to add more and more bits and pieces to the character, but in the end, using a little more restraint and scaling it back to t...

This is gener...
"Montague" Drawing!
Here is the final drawing for Montague! The Former Castle Steward and half-monster that we drew on our last Twitch Livestream! (November 11 VOD is still up on Twitch if you missed it!) We included Caspar, the Stovepipe Hero, in the scene, who we see sharing some tea with our Unlikely Hero. The Montague drawing was rendered on a really velvety paper that is no longer sold, called Graphic White. The closest thing to it out there now to it is Arches Hot Press Watercolor paper. I worked in a 2H pencil to sketch it out, then with a Rotring Rapid Pro ...
The Chatterpillar!
At long last, The Chatterpillar has emerged!! This monster was actually designed back in July, but lost his duel with the Grumble Bee. Finally he has his moment in the sun! The Scorpkin Battle!
WE DID IT! Today, I am happy to finally share the Scorpkin Battle! This image was every bit as challenging and fun as I'd hoped that it would be, but also, took every bit as long as I feared it might. Thank you everyone for sticking with us and hanging out for our record 7 Twitch streams that we spent on this image! This is really exciting to finally have it finished, and I can't wait to start pulling this series together into its final form. And speaking of that, I am not quite ready to reveal the "scented candles" line-up or ta...

I am still very excited about this piece, it is one I have be...

#LETSDRAWMONSTERS for OCTOBER!
Today at 5PM EST on TWITCH: https://twitch.tv/justingerardillustrationThe OCTOBER CREATURE CHALLENGE: THE HAMPIREPROMPT:The Hampire: An ancient terror from the forests of the old world. It was said to have once been a wild hog, whose tranquil, sunlit forest territory overlapped that of a certain rare species of bat. On moonlit nights this bat would leave its cold perches in high ravines to feast on the blood of the peaceful creatures of the forest while they slept. After a time, the hogs began to change, as the bites from these bats imparted a ...

Fungus Knight Brush Set!
We've got a really cool set for this one, with a total of 12 new brushes!CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD BRUSHESFor this month's monster, a lot of the detailing was done with the Toxic Toadstool #1 Brush, and a lot of the heavy lifting of the brushwork was handled by Inky Cap and the Puddlescratch WC Brush. I developed a new mixer brush MXR Mushroom Mix that is a little softer than my usual heavily textured ones.Toxic Spore #2 is one that has some really great use when adding in the muddy textures here and there, but you have to use it sparingly...

Elfin Sharpshooter Bonus Drawing
As I mentioned last month, I am currently doing a line-up of 12 character designs for a game called Fanstratics, from the makers of the original Heroes of Might and Magic game. Most of these will be classic fantasy archetypes. The game is still in early development, so it will be a while before there is any launch or alpha. As development continues, I will be designing and sharing one of the core characters from the game with you each month. This month!: The Elfin Sharpshooter. The process follows my usual route of starting with a tiny ink gestur...
The New Monster of the Month UNLIKELY HEROES Series
So far in the Monster of the Month Series, we have focused primarily on villainous monsters. But what about ...the other guys? Isn't anyone supposed to be fighting all these monsters?? The world we've created thus far has been slimy, unruly, hostile, hairy, bitey, drunken and disorderly. What we need are some HEROES. Even if they are, rather only small ones!Today, the Monster of the Month series takes its next steps! Moving forward, we are going to be including a pint-sized hero each month to round out the general villainy, wickedness, a...

"Witness to the End" Classic Fantasy Illustration for September 2020
This month I finally wrapped up a Plague of Dragons painting an image that I have been working on sporadically for the past few months. It was a frustrating image because every time I would get started on the image, something would pop up and pull me away from it. This is usually okay, but I think the image suffered a little from me constantly putting down and picking up the brush again and having to ask, 'okaaaay... so what was I doing again?' Even with the confusing way in which this image was painted, it offered a lot of really inter...
"The Fungus Infernus Knight" Monster of the Month for September Hi Res Wallpaper and GIF Animatic
Here is how our Monster for September turned out! I loved working on this one! And in truth, I wish I could just keep painting more of these knights! Sadly, other projects call and I must table them for now. I have12 others like this one (and the Rose Knight and Hedge Guard) already drawn out, and plan to share more of them when we start to reveal more of the next evolution in the Monster of the Month series. The painting process involved beginning in transparent layers, (using multiply) that felt very much like traditional watercolor, and then...
