April Update: Seventy-Five Percent
Hey team! Not a lot to discuss, but here's the skinny:75%When I started physical therapy this month, their preliminary assessment told me my leg was at 31% functionality. (This was after a chiropractor visit that had already improved things significantly.) I had my reevaluation this past week and I am up to 75%. That's more than double in under a month! It is very nice being, in many ways, a proper human being again. What this means for work is: I am able to sit at my desk again, provided I keep it to half-hour bursts and do a bunch of s...
Further Delays
Hey folks,I have a script finished and recorded.I also have the audio and all the slides from the talk I gave last week. What I also have is sciatica and cannot currently sit upright. In fact, I can't deviate much from this position:I think if I stay like this for the rest of my life I should be ok.You can imagine, this makes it hard to use a computer for any length of time.It seems like I start every year with a bunch of weird ailments. First my body screws me and then I screw it back: last year I followed a weird bug that gave me intense f...
February Update: Dotted Horizon
Hey team! Happy February.Next ThingsThe current plan is as follows: progress on the next Alt-Right Playbook continues slowly. I'm making headway in my thick, depressing research book and I have several pages of a script I like. Partway through writing it, though, I had a momentary inspiration, and quickly wrote a script for one last CO-VID. A few times in the past year I had the idea to make a video that just listed some things that had brought me some happiness in the shitstorm, but could never get a discussion of 5 or 6 things to feel rig...
January Update: I Forgot We Do This
Hey team!I was so excited to get a video online before the end of January that I kind of forgot I was supposed to do an update. Apologies! This being the shortest month of the year, we're only three weeks away from a February update, so I'll keep this brief. Not Sure About FebruaryThere's a decent chance there won't be a video this month. I am attempting to return to The Alt-Right Playbook this month, and the next one is a complex subject that it's important to me to get right. I have a fairly thick book I'm reading for r...
CO-VIDs: the 90's neoliberal fantasia as experienced by daria morgendorffer, millennial IS LIVE
The video is now public! I'll boost it again in the morning, but enjoy!
Early Access: Daria, 90's Nostalgia, Millennials, Neoliberalism
Hey team! Here's a rough cut of the next CO-VID! Hooo, been a minute, right? This script was written back in... September, I think? I've been poking at it ever since but elections, diseases, holidays, and coup attempts got in the way. But we finally have an edit!I'm out of town most of the rest of the month, so I won't be able to finalize it until next Wednesday. But I think all it needs is the intro and credits, and possibly to flip some of the footage so it stops tripping the copyright bots. This is a weird one. Hope you like it...
December Update: Year In Review
Hey team.Let's Get This Out Of The WayYou'll have noticed I didn't do a video in December. I made a conscious choice that I was going to prioritize enjoying my holiday, and also do work, but only inasmuch as it does not conflict with that enjoyment. I knew there was a risk that the video wouldn't be done, and I'd be apologizing to y'all for the third month in a row, but I decided, you know what? It may cost me money not to release in December, but if I come into 2021 not burnt out for once, it'll be money well-spent....
November Update: Exiting Quarantine
Hey team. Weird month, huh?Sorry for the lateness of this update. I've been out of quarantine for almost two weeks now, and I'm getting back into the swing of my various obligations, but I'm not moving at my fastest. By this time, my symptoms are pretty much cleared up. My stamina has taken a hit - when I'm active, I run out of steam a lot faster than I did before, but it's improving day by day. I can go for walks, I can cook meals, I can go to the grocery store. Life is going back to... well, not normal, things haven't ...
I have COVID
Hey team,I have tested positive for the coronavirus. So far it seems I have a really mild case, and we have good and (largely) affordable healthcare here in Massachusetts, so I am anticipating I will be okay. Provided there isn't a second wave of symptoms headed my way, I seem to already be on the mend. But we've converted my partner's little office room into a quarantine cell and this is my life for the next week and a half. So, um... probably no video this month, either.Take care of yourselves,-I
October Update: The Last Four Years
Hey team.A Moment to be SeriousThe next video is written. The audio is recorded and edited. The relevant footage is on my computer, and the edit has begun. But it won't be out before November.I am burnt out. All the tweaks to content, work schedule, and leisure time in the world cannot keep it away forever. The election is in less than a week. COVID cases in Massachusetts are back up to the levels they were in April because we reopened the goddamn schools, and there hasn't been any sunlight in days. I won't list all the ways Republi...
September Update: One and Done
Hey team!Making Robots Go BoomThis month has been eventful, to say the least. First, the semiotics of "cuck" got taken down after YouTube decided it was pornography. Then YouTube put it back up without telling me (but kept it age-restricted). Then Ragnar's video which I contributed to went public. Then I released what makes an fps arsenal good? (renamed from what makes a shooter arsenal good? because too many people thought it was about school shooters). Then, yesterday, the channel hit 300k subs. And the new video has done okay! Not...
CO-VID on arsenals is live!
Hey team! The video is public! You may have noted the version I posted two days ago is down. I realized after uploading that I forgot to put in the intro, and the compression settings looked like butt, and the audio was mixed too loud, so I did a re-export. And here it is!
Early Access: what makes a shooter arsenal good?
New CO-VID! I'm talking about video games again. Shooters have been my comfort food of late. This is me at my most Game Maker's Toolkit-y, let's see how that goes over!Oh, also, the semiotics of "cuck" is back online.
Ragnar's Video is Live! And my new video is gone!
Hey team!Thing 1Ragnar's new Games from the Underground video is live, complete with my four-minute segment on Peak Bleak Blues. It's mostly the same as when I showed you the preview, but Ragnar put music under it at my request (he's better at sound mixing than I am). Do check it out, the other contributors all did great work and there's some good stuff in there. :DThing 2I mentioned just the other day that YouTube had age-restricted the semiotics of "cuck." At first I was like "oh well," but then learned that ag...
semiotics of "cuck" [mirror]
Hey team, since the new video is blocked in a few countries due to a copyright strike, I've put a mirror of it on Vimeo. Enjoy, Denmark!
August Update: Unanticipated
Hey team! Welcome to September.AmbivalenceThe new video went up on Monday and is doing well. Surprisingly so, actually; it got more views in two days than the Kentucky Route Zero video got in two months. Due to the subject matter, YouTube has gone and age-restricted it, which I'm pretty sure kills whatever algorithmic momentum it had, but it's still going strong. And the response is very positive! The Far Right dinguses have (so far) left it alone, so, for the first time in ages, a video that's been online for several days still has...
the semiotics of "cuck" is public!
Aaaaaaaaaand it's live!
CO-VIDs: the semiotics of "cuck" (early access)
Hey team! Sorry I've been quiet this month. This video is longer and weirder than any previous CO-VIDs, and the subject matter required many drafts to get right (not to mention many attempts to talk myself out of writing it). I'm pretty happy with it, but... I really wonder what the internet is gonna make of this one.Currently the song I used for the outro is tripping YouTube's copyright system so I can't monetize. I'm debating whether to change the song or not; given the subject matter, I kinda suspect this would get put on...
Peak Bleak Blues preview
Heya folks! I mentioned that this last week I was working on a small collab with RagnarRox. Here's my piece: a quick look at the walking sim collection Peak Bleak Blues, which sorta functions as an ode to walking sims generally. Ragnar is working on a video about the Black Lives Matter itch.io bundle, with a bunch of contributions from different YouTubers about different games in the bundle, and this was the one I picked. When the finished thing goes live, I'll link that as well, but here's my bit for now!-I
July Update: There's Only One?!
Hey team!A Single VideoSo right after saying "maybe a video every week is too ambitious, let's treat two a month as the floor" I went and released only one video in July: the (recently-retitled) adventure games about jesus. There's no grand reason for this: there's the same mild burnout of living through ~3 apocalypses at once, the same wrestling with slightly higher ambitions with some videos, the same occasional scrapping of scripts that aren't as interesting as I thought they'd be. No single one of these has been ...
CO-VIDs: dropsy/alum is live!
Alright, I settled on "call it 'dropsy/alum' for the first week and then change the name to 'adventure games about jesus' for clicks." The True Fans will get the intended experience, and then I'll tip my hat.Go tell your friends!-I
Early Access: CO-VID on Dropsy and Alum
Hey all, this is done and going public tomorrow morning most likely. One of my more left-field subjects. Curious how it's going to go over.Still looking for a title, all I've got so far is "Dropsy/Alum," which isn't very punchy. I think simply revealing what the video is actually about would bring in a lot of clicks, but it's a stronger essay if it's a reveal? Not sure how to straddle those lines. If you've got suggestions, I wanna hear them!-I
June Update: The Engine Sputters But Does Not Die
Hey team!Returning to WorkWe again released two videos this month, respectively talking about the efficacy of political nonviolence and the experience of playing Kentucky Route Zero piecemeal over the last nine years. I have pledged to donate all the ad proceeds for these videos to Critical Resistance, though it's the first time I've had to fiddle with AdSense to actually get my money and so far I haven't pulled it off. I may have to pay some stuff out of pocket while I troubleshoot that.I'm currently working on a heavily-revise...
CO-VIDs: kentucky route zero's terminus IS LIVE
sneak into your old high school and play it over the PA
Early Access: CO-VID on Kentucky Route Zero
Hey team! I haven't been doing early access videos for CO-VIDs, but I wanted to throw a rough cut online just to see if the outro music flags the copyright bots and figured I'd send it to y'all as long as it's up. No text or graphics yet, but they're gonna be pretty sparing in this video anyway. Also, mild spoilers for Kentucky Route Zero, if you haven't played it.Kicking around a few names for this one, suggestions welcome!-I
CO-VIDs: the gandhi trap
New CO-VID. Sorry for the delay; the world was already exploding when I started this series and in the last few weeks it exploded further. Had to figure out how to work under even more stress than before. This is the first expressly political CO-VID, and my first attempt to address breaking news on my channel. Script started out big and sprawling, then finally got whittled down to one, primary point as I decided it was better to say something well than to be timely. The bits I hacked off will make their way into a future, traditionally-researche...
May Update: Where To Even Begin
Hey team. The BasicsWe put out two videos this month. (Thanks to Radek for the excellent suggestion of naming them CO-VIDs.) I also wrote up my thoughts on Outer Wilds (be warned, they get a little heavy). There's not going to be a CO-VID today. I was working on something about the semiotics of "cuck" that I had to scrap, might revisit it later. Then I wrote and recorded something about adventure games. Then my country fucking erupted into massive protests and a whole lot of overt police fascism and 10 minutes on why adventure games a...
CO-VIDs: that one guillermo del toro movie
oops I did it again
CO-VIDs: the penny problem
here 'tis, as promised
Something Different This Way Comes
Hey team,As of yesterday, my first Quarantine Diary video is done. I'm doing a final pass on it this afternoon and then hitting publish. It's about Dr. Horrible's Sing-a-long Blog. It feels good to be finishing things again! Here's the current plan for these diary videos: I want to publish one every Monday. Not sure if that's overly-ambitious, but I gave myself a one week turnaround on this video and pulled it off, so that's going to be the target and we'll see if it's sustainable. They have permission to be slopp...
