Patenting Game Mechanics: A Worse Idea Than Stadia (The Jimquisition)

Patenting game mechanics is bad. It's bad. It's simply bad. So is Google Stadia, and we're going to talk about both Google's failings and Warner Bros. Interactive's patent hoarding. Google ceases Stadia game development, Shadow of Mordor's Nemesis System becomes WB's sole dominion, AND we get to take a look at what I've been doing in Monster Hunter lately. It's what you all tuned in for. Love you.

Occupy Stonk Street (The Jimquisition)

So there's really only one thing to talk about this week, and that's the whole mess that happened with GameStop and Wall Street. It's pretty much a perfect look at the wider problems we regularly discuss. When the ultra wealthy find their positions challenged, they have little problem demonstrating that the free market is only free to them, and that all their shaming lectures about how you should invest are total garbage. The whole system is a bunch of made up nonsense, designed purely to ensure the elite stay elite at everybody els...

Death & Taxes (The Jimquisition)

Another normal one today! We chat about Euro Truck Simulator vaccinating itself against controversy, we say goodbye to the FCC chairman that nobody liked, and we discuss Activision making money thanks to a global pandemic. Now I am going to brace for impact. No reason. Also, Floridus Snake.

The Jimquisition's New Groove, And Other Updates

Hello, you friendly little bottom burps! In keeping with my desire to provide more updates, here I am providing more updates. Can I stop this one from becoming a bloody novella this time? Maybe?Anyway, The Jimquisition tried a slightly different thing this week, tackling four different subjects instead of going all-in on one topic for twenty minutes. I was incredibly happy with how it turned out, and thrilled that it went over so well once it was published. With the show being literally ten years old, it's sure as shit a good time to give t...

How I Do My Awards (Or, Why Doom Eternal Was Robbed!)

Game of the Year awards are as prone as any other form of videogame critique to causing upset. Very much like controversies surrounding game reviews, I've read the same debates crop up, year after year, for decades. Before I even started getting into it myself. The most common phrase to occur in any given comment section is "(Game) was robbed!" Robbed! "How could you give an award to this game, but not to this one," is another stock phrase, closely mirroring the arbitrary score comparisons you can often see in response to re...

The Jimquisition Game Of The Year Awards 2020

With 2020 now safely in the rear view, we can all start dreading 2021 and its inevitable horrors. First, let's take one positive break and look back at the games of 2020 that won our hearts. Could Fall Guys make the cut? The Last of Us Part 2? Animal Crossing? Who knows? Well, I know. So will you if you watched The Jimquisition Awards of 2020!

Here Is A Colorful Game With Themes Of Cartoon Genocide

Here is Phantast, it's a game you can look at. You wouldn't think it at first glance, but it's a game about genocidal land seizure in which the persecutors are the heroes. At least that's the way I've chosen to read it.

If you would like the audio of the song we put together for A Song of Cyberpunk, here you go! Thank you so much to everyone who shared the video and wrote nice things about it. And of course to the lovely patrons who not only give us the time and resources to do this kind of nonsense, but have kept us doing business as usual during a scary, scary year.I had the idea to do a song on Friday night. I make up stupid songs all the time, usually just blurting guff out of my mouth and making it rhyme. I like to try coming up with pointless little song...

A Song Of Cyberpunk (The Jimquisition)

Hey, did you hear about Cyberpunk? The game of the year, except the versions that are total junk! It's a singin' Jimquisition this week as we take a look at the unbelievably humiliating week CD Projekt RED has endured since the incompetent release of Cyberpunk 2077. It's been quite an ordeal. From bugs to takedowns to international appeasement, CDPR has managed to do to its credibility in a matter of days what most publishers take years to accomplish. Videogame Discourse: More Broken Than Cyberpunk (The Jimquisition)

Cyberpunk 2077 is finally out, which means people are unhappy, because that's how videogames work. We know the routine with massively hyped "AAA" videogames by now. Before the game is even out, it accrues a mass of fans who've already decided to love it and will attack anyone who disagrees. Then the reviews come out, and all hell breaks loose. Between a stagnant games media, permissive industry, and violently zealous fans, videogame discussion is well and truly broken. As broken as Cyberpunk 2077, which - after all the controver...

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity - Durable Fun (Jimpressions)

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is a prequel to a sequel and a sequel to a spin-off. It's also really bloody good, I reckon. With a more complex Warriors formula than usual, a diverse range of characters that have their own play styles as well as movesets, and a whole ton of content, it's mechanically superior to the first Hyrule Warriors, even if it doesn't quite benefit from the original's novelty factor. Also, you get to keep all your weapons.

jimquisition post "They'll Buy It Anyway" Doesn't Excuse The Corporate Racket (The Jimquisition) from patreon

"They'll Buy It Anyway" Doesn't Excuse The Corporate Racket (The Jimquisition)

Ever since I first started criticizing the business practices of mainstream videogame publishers, people have been quick to remind me that it doesn't matter what I think, people will buy games anyway. The facts are the facts, and I can't dispute the truth that publishers enjoy success regardless of how they treat their staff and their audience. They will continue to make money, even as the industry faces scandal after scandal, and publicly sneers at all accountability. I'm told that all this is proof that the publishers are right. T...

Excerpt From The Draft Of The Jimquisition Book That I Probably Won't Finish

Oh, hello, it is me again, Jim Sterling. This isn't part of the book draft, by the way, this is just an introduction. Firstly, thank you for all the kind words and support in response to the last blog post (I guess we can go with just calling them that for now). I'd like to do more, but I know better than to make promises when it's been almost a month and I literally forget every day that I started redoing Squirty Play videos! In any case, I felt it very worthwhile to write that stuff down and make sure everybody knows the deal with ...

No, You're NOT A Gamer! (Commentocracy)

Animal Crossing? Not a real game. Pokémon? Not a real game. Anything that doesn't use a PS4 controller? Can it be called anything close to a game? Duke Amiel H'ardcore is back to share a classic in gamer gatekeeping, as we learn how many hours a REAL gamer puts into their playtime. After all, if it's not a job, it's not a game!
