Xiaolan is under a contract to work at the rear palace for a set time, after the contract is up she can leave and get work on her own. Xiaolan realizes if she can read and write that makes her a more desirable worker. The word for cat and the word for fur are pronounced the same, so our MC (catcat) and the kitten (furfur) are pronounced Maomao but different spellings.

As a reader of the light novels I would just say that while this episode was "light" and you don't think it introduced much in the way of mysteries it laid a BUNCH of groundwork for future plot points. A lot of throw away lines and details are actually relevant for later. Cara's instincts about the cat are also good. As for Jinshi's cuddle with the cat...have you never stuck your nose in a kittens belly?! Nothing untoward about it!

Is not so much that Jinshi is a dude, but as far as Maomao is aware he's an enuch, meaning he was castrated

I found it hilarious when Jinshi compared his relationship with Maomao to her explanation of why cat lovers like cats, and then cuddled the cat and said "I get it now". Good start and great reaction as always.

The contract of the serving girls in the rear palace is for 2 years, that's why at the start of S1 Maomao said she will be out in 2 years. If Xiaolan doesn't get a different position with a new contract she will eventually have to leave the rear palace. Since she was sold into it by her family she will have no where to go and will have to find a way to support herself on her own.

One of my favorite bits of humanity hasn't changed much, is we have surviving drawings and bits of poetry various Chinese Emperors have made about their favorite cats. You could post them on line today, and they wouldn't really stand out.

I'm so glad Maomao and Jinshi are back! Fair warning: My way-longer-than-necessary ramblings are also back! Maomao (the apothecary) and Maomao (the cat) actually have totally different names. Chinese is a monosyllabic tonal language with each sound that could be a word having up to 4.5 tones... at least for Mandarin, Cantonese has more and other dialects may have more or fewer. While there are many homophones (words that are the same tone so they can only be differentiated via context or in writing) Maomao (the girl) and Maomao (the cat) are not among them. So if the characters were actually speaking Chinese, the names would sound different. The two Maomaos are also written differently. Our Maomao is (first tone) 貓貓/"cat cat" the kitten Maomao is actually (second tone or possibly also third tone when used as a name like here) 毛毛/"fur fur" or "hair hair" (but not the hair on your head)
