Tale #130: Baby's Second First Halloween

The metaphor of the boiling frog was apt for Cooper, which made the big smiling frog on his colorful shirt all the more ironic. What had started with a few wet mornings all those months ago had gradually and slowly escalated to the point he was at now. Hands full of goldfish, eyes glued to 'Alvin and the Chipmunks Meet Frankenstein', with a crinkly disposable diaper that was clearly wet and possibly worse.
His friends didn't come around as much anymore, at least not the ones that valued their reputation. Cooper hadn't been in a real school for over six months now, but many of his former peers knew exactly what had become of him. He'd done a decent job hiding his problems earlier on, but as he'd gotten more sloppy and less refined, they'd all eventually caught on to what he'd turned into.
Cooper was a mama's boy, that much was obvious, but he'd taken it to an infantile extreme. He was but a few months shy of being eleven and he lived the life of a toddler. It wasn't like his slippage could be excused by brain damage or trauma either; he'd simply slowly allowed himself to regress, and his mother had enabled (or rather, encouraged) him to do it.
He wasn't stupid, though he did get a little baby-brained throughout the day. It was like he'd been conditioned into becoming this, and few self-respecting tweens wanted to associate themselves with sippy cups and diaper checks.
His siblings had been in that same boiling pot with him. They'd watched him march backwards in maturity, but it'd been too slow for them to acknowledge just how bad it'd become. Rewinding back to Cooper's tenth birthday, and no one in his life would have assumed that he'd be going toward his next birthday with a drooly pacifier in his mouth and a sticky, stinky loaded diaper under his butt.
Cooper had come to normalize it all. By this point in the game, it didn't at all perturb him to be unknowingly soiling himself while watching cartoons meant for preschoolers. His former self hadn't been run through with a sword, but he'd been victim of a thousand tiny cuts that would fell him over time.
The only genuine reactions to take as proof of how extreme things were came from people who hadn't seen Cooper in a long time. Relatives or classmates that he'd never been all that close with; old teammates from baseball or swim practice. They knew Cooper when he'd been normal, and then their next view of him had been as a diaper-pooping tot.
Any other boy would have likely been mortified to find himself living in this devolved existence. To return to such babyish things and to be treated more or less like a three year old. Cooper was happy though; he was content with what his life had become, which was helped by his lack of perspective on the matter. The changes had felt so organic, and while some of it had been unpleasant, he'd never once felt unloved or unsupported.
It also wasn't as if he was being forced to live like this. The accidents and subsequent diapers might have been out of his control, but it wasn't as if mother had forced him to only watch baby shows or suck on his thumb. Allowing himself to regress may have been a coping mechanism for his shame, but maybe it was possible that he'd just not been ready to grow up.
Cooper still had some of his old interests still, too. He still watched cartoons he used to watch, played games he used to play, and so forth. The hard part was deciding if he was a preteen playing the part of a toddler, or a toddler playing the part of a preteen.
Ultimately, such silly thoughts weren't worth quibbling over for Cooper. He had a sippy full of apple juice and yummy little crackers to munch on. What more did he need?
A gentle gurgling came from his bowels and that cut his introspection completely adrift. Relieving the pressure down below was of far greater importance than pondering the state of things. The little boy raised his padded butt off the floor and idly began to push.
"Hmmpph...Hrrmmff..." The blond quietly grunted, his eyes staying fixed on the colorful screen in front of him.
The diaper around his waist rustled during the sudden expansion it was undergoing; the bottom puffed out and bulged with the heft of his droppings. Warmth danced around the front of his diaper too, signifying his bladder was taking this opportunity to release as well.
Once Cooper was satisfied and felt he was done, he unceremoniously plopped back down right on top of the fuming pile he'd made. Having a squishy butt didn't bother him. It hadn't bothered him when he was first in diapers, and it didn't bother him now. It was actually quite pleasant, especially with the winter months coming up.
He'd be needing some of the warmth tonight, if the last week had been any indication. It'd been getting chilly outside, which luckily his costume would do well to insulate against, and a full diaper would only further help.
Tonight would be first Halloween as an oversized toddler. A second 'first' Halloween. If he was mentally in the same place as he had been a few months prior, then the idea might've made him nervous, for concerns of traipsing around the neighborhood in Pampers. Now though, his anxiety only centered around the fear of seeing something too spooky for his delicate constitution.
The candy would be well worth being scared, but his poor diaper would inevitably suffer from his infantile cowardice. Thankfully he didn't mind being dirty, but his siblings weren't as ecstatic about the fumes he was capable of creating; he also didn't want to run the risk of leaking, since that'd cut his trick-or-treating short.
Later in the afternoon, long after getting his stinky pants taken care of, his mommy would be helping him get ready for the evening ahead. The first thing she would pull from her bag was what looked like an orange pair of rubber underwear; upon further examination, he saw it was something pumpkin themed.
"Aren't these precious? They should help keep your costume all dry and clean." She informed him, before helping him stand in the diaper cover to pull it over his freshly changed babypants.
"It's a Jack-o-lantern!" Cooper quipped as he cocked his head and caught sight of his bum in the mirror.
"That's right, baby. Just for Halloween." She cooed, giving him a pat on the seat and turning again to get his costume.
Cooper's costume wouldn't be a surprise in that same vein; he'd been allowed to decide for himself what he would be wearing tonight. Since his mental regression, he'd gained a newfound appreciation for playing with toy trains and watching Thomas the Tank Engine; that had made his costume an easy choice, and his mother had been more than willing to accommodate.
Cooper was going to be a conductor. It wasn't anything spooky like many other kids would be wearing, but he hadn't wanted a scary costume.
Before the rest of the costume though, his mother had gotten him something to further help with his unique little problem. It was a white onesie that would help prevent his diaper from sagging too much, and the pinstripe overalls would go right over it. Next came the red bandanna around his neck, and finally came the cap to match his overalls.
"Don't you just look adorable." His mother swooned, "Let's get some pictures."
She took a few of just him and the photogenic boy was more than willing to play the part of her muse. She then led him back to the living room and called for her other two children to come get some pictures taken too.
His older two siblings, Sam and Kate, would probably have argued that they were too old to go trick-or-treating, since they were in middle school now, but they had been tasked with helping to take their 'baby' brother around the neighborhood and thus there had been no reason not to dress up.
Sam, the oldest, was dressed as the grim reaper, while Kate, the middle child, had dressed like a witch. Their holiday appropriate costumes were a stark contrast with the juvenile one that the youngest had decided on.
Cooper's relationship with his siblings hadn't changed that much. He'd always been the baby of the family and had been treated that way; it might be more literal now, but it didn't feel all that different than how things had been a year ago. He was playfully teased and condescended to; if anything, his siblings were a little more protective of him now that the age gap felt more pronounced.
"I want to get you all in the same picture!" Their mother announced as she fiddled with the camera.
The kids grouped together, with little Cooper beaming brightly at the forefront. She took a few normal pictures and then told them to make a goofy face for a 'silly' photo, which had Cooper sticking his tongue out and getting 'bunny ears' from his older brother.
Finally it was time for the three to head out. Their mother would be staying behind to hand out candy, which meant that Sam and Kate were responsible for keeping the 'baby' safe while trick-or-treating. Sam gave his word that he wouldn't let Cooper out of his sight and eased his mother's concerns about having a safe evening.
They'd been allowed to go out like this for several years now, but this was the first time that Cooper was regressed to such a 'small' state. It harkened back to a time when all three of the children had been much younger, when Cooper had been in diapers the first time.
They left the house as the sun was starting to set, and as kids were beginning to fill the streets; dressed in all sorts of costumes and gleefully swinging their candy pails around, anticipating the sweet confections that'd make their bellies ache before bed tonight.
The trio would start locally, going to the nearby houses to ring the bell and call out 'trick-or-treat!' Cooper would get many compliments on how 'cute' his costume looked, which made him beam, but the candy getting dropped in how bucket would make him smile even wider.
Being surrounded by other kids, it would become pretty obvious that Cooper's conductor costume was more similar to the kinds of costumes that the smaller kids were wearing: not meant to make him look scary, strong, or cool, but to be cute and unimposing. The crinkling from under his overalls drove that point home further. He was far from the only diapered butt here, but he was definitely the only one above preschool age that was wearing one.
His siblings guided him house to house, making sure that he wouldn't try to run ahead. With how excited Cooper was, there ran the risk that he'd get distracted and get himself lost, and then their mom would be looking at the older two to blame. Cooper didn't seem to mind having his hand held, though he did get fussy whenever he felt that his siblings weren't moving fast enough.
About half an hour later, when they had moved onto another block and their candy pails were a little more than halfway full, Cooper was starting to feel a small bubbling in his tummy. After becoming so accustomed to his diapers, he didn't pay it much mind; worrying about such adult matters as his own potty needs no longer interested him. It wasn't really his responsibility to worry about, because that's why he had his diapers.
Pushing any thoughts about the feeling to the back of his head, he clomped up to yet another door with his siblings and excitedly rang the bell. He didn't wait to see the face of the person that answered before jutting out his pumpkin pail and chirping: "Trick or treat!"
"Cooper? Is that you?"
Standing at the door with a bowl of candy was none other than the teacher he'd had last year. Ms. Sullivan, who had only seen the first stage of his devolution, before the semester had ended and he'd become homeschooled by his mommy. The last time his teacher had seen him, he'd still been very normal; it'd been before he'd gone back to diapers full-time and before he'd let himself regress into the infantile form that he'd gone on to take.
It took him a moment to recognize her, but he gave a sheepish smile when it came together in his head. He knocked his knees together and giggled a little, "Hiya Ms. Sullivan! I din't know you lived over here! Can I have some candy?"
The woman dumped some candy into his pail and gave him a closer look. "Are you a train conductor, sweetie?"
"Uh-huh! I make the trains go choo-choo!" He excitedly gushed as he bounced on the balls of his feet, his diaper rustling underneath his overalls.
To someone who wasn't aware of what had happened, it really did appear like Cooper had suffered a head injury or had some kind of psychological break that had resulted in a mental regression. Considering that Ms. Sullivan had been his teacher for most of a year, it was fair to say that she'd gotten to know him well enough to see that this wasn't completely normal.
She was polite though, so she didn't make a comment about it. Instead the woman gave him a pat on the head and smiled, "Well, it's a very cute costume, Cooper. Have a happy Halloween."
There were few people that drew Cooper out of his infantile stupor; most people, like with his old teacher there, he didn't mind to show his new side to, but then there were those that made him remember what shame was supposed to be.
That'd been what he felt at the next house. He'd gone up alone, while his siblings discussed which way they should go next, and he'd rung the doorbell.
Instead of seeing a towering adult that would answer it, he saw a face that he hadn't seen since before this had all happened: Spencer.
Spencer had been the haughty prodigy that'd skipped two grades and landed himself in Cooper's class. He would have had a better time fitting in if he'd made an effort not to alienate his classmates; besides being rude and arrogant, he'd also been kind of weird and smelly.
It'd been in gym class that Cooper had deduced exactly why that was: Spencer's Spongebob briefs had been skidded like a racetrack! Cooper had pointed it out while they were changing and the rest had been history.
It hadn't really been intentional on Cooper's part, but that mattered little in the way that it had played out. The little 'prodigy' got pegged as a pantspooper at worst, and an incapable wiper at best. Already two years younger than everyone, and with an extremely fragile ego, these allegations had haunted him deeply.
And now he was answering the door, wearing a mad scientist costume.
"...Cooper? You live around here?"
The cute little persona that had taken over his being felt shy in that moment, and Cooper briefly returned to how he'd once been.
"S-Spencer? Uh, yeah, I do...Umm... Why aren't you trick-or-treating?"
The younger boy scowled, "Mom says that I'll get kidnapped and murdered if I go out, and that the candy probably all has poison or razor blades in it. I just get to hand out this carob crud. So, are you really homeschooled now? I thought you'd moved."
"...Sorta. Y-yeah, I don't go to school anymore."
Spencer scowled, "Ruin my life and then run off. How good for you. Why are you dressed like that? That's such a dorky costume..."
"I didn't do anything! And you're one to talk, mister lab coat. Just gimme some candy and I'll go."
Spencer grumbled and dug around the bowl to get a candy for the trick-or-treater at his door. As he did, the rumblings returned in the pit of Cooper's belly; he'd earlier ignored them, because he hadn't cared about pooping himself in months, but now that he was cognizant, the feeling brought dread.
"I hope you know that the other kids still make fun of me, all because you-- Are you okay? Why are you making that face?"
Spencer gawked at Cooper's twisting expression. Cooper didn't really have any bowel control anymore, so regardless of what he was trying to will, his body was following the protocol it was accustomed to. Cooper bent his knees and suddenly let a juicy fart sputter wildly into his diaper.
"O-oh, gross! What's your problem? You think that's funny?" Spencer squeaked, covering his nose with his hands.
"Mmmph! I gotta-- gotta..." Cooper grunted, his cheeks burning and his fists clenching.
There was a sudden crackling and Cooper felt that something immense was descending upon his puffy diaper. The act of soiling himself made his mind get hazy, as if he'd been so conditioned that the deed made him baby-brained.
He desperately tried to cling to his thoughts as the tremendous turd made landfall and tented out the back of his overalls. Conductors weren't supposed to go dookie in their diapers! They were supposed to be responsible and commanding!
*'Conductors make sure the train goes: chugga-chugga-chugga--'*
"--POO-POO!"
What had been a slow crash suddenly accelerated into meteoric impact. The entirety of the steamer made home in his Huggies and a trickle of drool ran down his chin at the relief of the giant dump he'd taken in his pants.
Spencer looked shocked, appalled, and completely captivated. It was starting to become more clear why Cooper was being homeschooled now.
"You just filled your pants! You're nothin' but a dumb baby now! Gee, skids in my undies are sure better than a big icky load in my DIAPER."
Cooper was torn between humiliation and contentment. This had been quite the hurdle in his night, but he was feeling his mind dull back to the comforts of his second infancy. So what if he had just pooped himself in front of this jerk? It wasn't gonna ruin his Halloween!
Ignoring the teasing, Cooper held out his bucket again: "Twick-o-tweat!"
