Plot twist, awesome plot twist

Blahful

100 years is but a speck to a cultivator.

Justin McBurnett

But his father couldn't use Qi to fix it. Also remember the importance of the yang plant that was given to Jin's wife, his father placed great importance on the plant to make him strong. Also, at the beginning he was really slow at cultivating compared to the others. I think it makes sense that that is the reason old Jiang took him to that trial to correct the birth detect that was too late to correct the normal way and didn't get healed by the yang plant since it was given away.

I've got a love/hate realtionship with this novel. On one hand its the best piece of fiction I've read, and on the other I age 100 years between each chapter.

burning_the_paper

Also, even if he had been his father would have been able to detect the condition almost immediately and remedy it. As grandpa said, it can be cured if it is discovered early on.

sapassde .

His name was Qing Jianguo at the time, he probably just decided to cut it short to not make people react at all to him having the same name as the emperor whenever he introduced himself. Or this doesn't make sense since its "Jian Guo" rather than "Jiang Uo" that it'd be read as? Maybe you're right.

Blahful

he was not. Jin was already cultivating and learning medicine before Jiang showed up.

Red Potato

I wonder if that means Jin was born with the condition, and that’s why they decided on the nine snake god trial, for the meridians.

JaegerMaxim

Wow!

Further Beyond

Woah. Jianguo was truly the best dad. Did he...

bar lupo, the main other amazing Cultivation story that's at least this good that I'd recommend is the Cradle series by Will Wight. Published on Amazon. Amazing audiobook. There are a lot of other good ones, but the reality is that Ave Rem Xia Y is towards the top, and anything I'd recommend won't be quite as good. Except Cradle, which is at the top, for me. Beware of Chicken is another good example, though it feels distinctly different from this. My best bet is to just search through Royal Road by order of popularity, for stuff with the tag Xianxia. I also filter out anything that's litrpg. All those are the top ones I might recommend, though they're not as good as this. And unfortunately, quite a few of them are dead. I'm really quite frustrated by the popularity of litrpg. Cultivation really lets you get some amazing progression stuff, but there aren't enough good writers writing it. All the good writers are stuck on litrpg, and so even if those fics are good in theory, they're unreadable to me. Ugh. Anyway, I do adore this fic and love to get my fix every Monday morning.

Blahful

This was not the family reunion I predicted

burning_the_paper

Really makes me wonder what MB's actual goal is with all these games. It's obvious he doesn't want Liu Jin to fail, so I can only assume he knows he's the son of the Black Dragon and is trying to impart wisdom and care for him in the only way a fucked-up monster like MB can.

burning_the_paper

Yeah, Mat pretty much makes the rest of the genre irrelevant with how good AXRY is. It not only manages to grasp what draws people to xianxia stories, and includes all the popular tropes, but with actual character depth and a story you're invetested in.

Al

I just had a thought. We've been getting hints back to the "gravity" of cultivators mainly in the context of finding opportunities to become stronger. We've also gotten hints that this is an incomplete view of how things work. I'm thinking "cultivator gravity" extends to other, more peaceful and philosophical opportunities. Finding family he didn't even know to look for might help Liu understand himself better.

Al

I think if Liu actually totally overthrew the "legitimate" government and replaced them with the people who are currently bandits, it might just be bold and amusing enough that Murong would roll with it. It's risky enough that getting gold lightning might be a better shot.

Moonkiller24

Mat Haz is honestly a cunt. This is the first Cultivation story I have found. I was hoping the rest of genere is this good. F me

Moonkiller24

WHATTTTTTTTT?!!!!!

AB

This chapter was another masterclass. Everything was great, Liu Jin's speech to his soldiers, him sharing his story to the brotherhood and the grandfather revelation. Mat haz, you are my favorite web novel writer.

serguzzle

Amazing. Yeah, this isn't a coincidence. I kind of feel like his grandfather knows more than he lets on here.

Derek Walker

I wonder if this family encounter is necessary for the next step in the development of his Dao?

Pete

Leader Liu's sister I think

Pipeman

Weight of Cultivator stuff goes a long way to cover things, but I wouldn't discount Murong Bang knowing literally everything either. He does seem like the type of guy who wouldn't actually bother acting on the knowledge because he can use it for setting up situations like these later on and, while most of his guys are way too blunt tools to keep him informed without escalating things, he has at least one supremely competent "subordinate" he can rely on for these kinds of things.

Martin Toder

If Jin tried something like that, I think murong bangang would laugh for like 2 minutes, and then beat him to death

Blorcyn

> Their care for the old man feels genuine, which makes them naturally way of him Wary? > The old sighs, a sorrowful look on his face. missing man after old? His grandfather and his uncle. Family. I hope he doesn’t needlessly hide himself from them. He needs some love.

Valerian

Yes

Elijah Overland

I'm a little confused. So did Jin's dad marry Leader Liu's daughter while using the name of Old Jiang?

Silverias

Our boy really needs to tell him. I don't think we need another secret just hanging around.

Further Beyond

And our true friends are the bandits we met along the way

AZ

“Murong Bang wanted the heads of the bandits and every single person who cooperated with them.” Are the real bandits not the ones who sold their people to slavers?

Al

I really hope Liu gets a chance to talk a bit more openly with his grandfather and uncle before things are over. That has the potential to be really sweet/tragic.

Mecanimus

That was unexpected!

Catherine

Agreed. It’s a hell of a coincidence though. Reminds me of Xun Huwens belief of the weight of cultivators

Further Beyond

He'd either laugh uproariously, or directly challenge him about it because he can

Further Beyond

I'm loving how all the secrets are coming out. Little bits to different people has been great for building up tension. Was great seeing Lu Mei's reaction a little further back, and looks like soon a lot more people are going to be connecting the dots.

Sam Oppy

I don’t think Murong Bang knew at all

Catherine

I wonder if Murong bang knew. It would be a massive coincidence if he didn’t but I don’t know how he could know. Liu Jin didn’t know who his mother was. Did his father tell Murong Bang before he left or something?

Gamer Doyle

So Liu Jin drops a ton of heads in front of Murong Bang with the City Lord Lei Jihai on top. "Here are the people who were plundering Rainfall City and its areas."

CentaureHeart

Wow, that's a reveal

Robert Mullins

Say it with me everyone: Dun dun dun!!!! And thus Murong Bang's game is revealed.
