The needle also flexes a lot when travelling in any but the intended direction (at least that cheapo I got) which made my mission more difficult

Some feedback on the video: The speaker advertisement was too long. I almost turned it off because of it and I would've missed the cool project at the end. Maybe make it clear at the beginning that there's actually a project inside the video? Also the horn background music when you got to the CNC part was too distracting to hear your voice.

Wow! Idea to play vinyl records with CNC machine is absolutely hilarious! I imagine that you can find center of the record by moving head along X (and then Y) axis and then analyzing audio signal. There should be spikes every time you skip from grove to grove... Yeah, that definetelly could be an interesting side-project.
