I second Morten's idea, I think this is really interesting. I'd like to see some more videos about this guy's setup.
There is a tradition amongst wood workers to build fixtures and machines from the material they know best. Lots of articles around about building bandsaws, jointers and planers from wood. If it's what you're most comfortable with, why not wood? It's inexpensive, vibration dampening and he has the equipment to work it. It's not like he has to hold 10 micron tolerances in his finished work!

I don't know much about cnc machines but what would be the advantages (besides the cost) of building a big cnc out of wood?
