Made an adjustable motor dynamometer
🕑 Added 2018-03-24 14:36:27 +0000 UTCfor repeatable load testing in the next CNC episode. To give the BLDC servo a chance I needed it to be switchable while running.
It's super simple too: The rotary switch shunts the two stepper motor phases with equal resistances between 4 and 0 ohm, the on/off switch just disconnects everything.

Might need a bigger one, not because it can't take it but because it skips steps at higher forces

Yes, I think that would actually make it a dynamometer, like this without measurement it is just an adjustable load

Could you measure the voltage to track the performance as well perhaps?

Assuming the poor stepper can cope, this would make a great torture test rig for cordless drills.

Isn't that called docking? ;)

I knew that that was possible somewhere in the back of my head, but I've never actually tried it. Until now 🤗 Very satisfying

Nice and simple

Haha. I had 2 stepper motors mounted to a fronpanel and connected together. So whenever you turn one the other one would also turn. I gave that every visitor to play with and EVERYONE was looking for the belt at first. So funny !
