🕑 Added 2017-12-07 12:02:41 +0000 UTC I think general purpose cnc machines don't need encoder feedback, because step loss is almost always audible. But since I am still pursuing my ideal-machine-agenda, I think I'll use these hybrid stepper motors with built-in rotary encoders.
Proper glass linear encoders on the moving parts of the machine would be even better, but that would be a huge overkill, wouldn't it?
After trying no less than 11 CNC shops I just got the first quote for the base plate, that I could afford. It will be made from C45 steel only, but if I invest another 50 bucks in a few camping cookers and oil I should able to harden it very nicely.

2300 for a common tool steel called 1.1730 and 3780 for a very good stainless steel called 1.4301. I'm sure the prices are somewhat justified, probably for precise optical benches n stuff ... but no way I am paying that :)
Really looking forward to this! 2300 drilled and 3780 drilled and tapped?

It will bend during hardening. If you need it perfectly flat, you will need to grind it on a surface grinder.

I am clearly working in the wrong business... About that stepper thing: The new Prusa MK3 uses the vhange in motor current to detect missed steps. The firmware and hardware is opensource, and should be available (or soon) and you can have a look at that if you want a different option of doing lost-step-detection.
