I was doing this event in Long Beach called “taste of downtown.” I also have this deadline for a painting tomorrow (which really means today because I have to get a picture of it.) and in between I just had work and life stuff to take care of too.But here’s some of the grotesques I did, I did the first ever family portrait! New painting in the works
I liked the still life-ness of the “oldest trick” piece I did. I’m trying to get a new 12x12” piece done for this group show at a gallery I really want to be in. I did this study all from imagination using the Zorn pallet (black, red, yellow ochre, white) and added a little ultramarine blue to the mix and transparent red iron oxide as a “cheat color” between red and yellow ochre.I started sculpting the maquette after I got home from the gallery last night. Went to hang the show today. Didn’t get the best pictures. I don’t really like hanging shows. I’m not good at it. I’ll just put everything wherever it fits and whatever. Oldest Trick in the Book
Finally got some useable photos after like 12 hours of shooting.Here's some stuff about the things.So in the bottom right, we have a scattering of trash. The trickster is a god of trash. Framer's Brain
Today was a framing day.I varnished "oldest trick" and it's drying outside in a box.I accidentally killed a spider. I prefer to catch and release spiders. Especially with all this trickster stuff on my mind lately. I think of spiders as little Anansi's running around. Just when I think I'm out, they pull me back in
So I finished all that photography stuff yesterday, started varnishing "oldest trick," then I went to start editing the photos of the "cave shenanigans" piece. I scanned this one about a week ago and when I opened it to start editing it I noticed that awful line on the right hand side.So annoying. The painting is already varnished so I can't scan it again. I don't want to set the camera back up to take a picture. So...went through pixel by pixel to get rid of it. It never ends! but who am I to complain.I think I got it...
Getting ready for the show
Trying to get a good picture of this one. I hate taking pictures. I had to watch YouTube tutorials about aperature, shutter speed, iso and all that.Then I just spent all day adjusting all that stuff, changing the lighting, moving the camera. All day except for a little detour I took attempting to put the other one into a floater frame. Which I also couldn’t seem to figure out. So I watched YouTube tutorials about that. That feeling when you know you’re about to stay up to finish a painting

Pancake day
It’s hard to photograph this piece because it’s dark and glossy. I don’t know how I’m actually going to photograph it for prints and stuff. But I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it. I had to use a 3D modeling program to see how an actual plate would look in this position. I put a simple cylinder on it to see the lighting. Then I put some magpies and leaves on the plate. Getting in there
I’m trying to paint this in three sections basically. From right to left. Here’s what I spent most of today looking at.The far right thing is a Napkin crumpled up. Looks like a poop. I like that.
