prepping the canvas

In this video I'll show you how I've been preparing my canvases with molding paste and gesso. It's important to add a primer or ground, even if your surface is pre primed, because it will add a base layer of something that is unique to your hand.Enjoyhappy June 20thHave funGoodnight Sweeties

Scum Choir post Study Sale for Patrons only from patreon

Study Sale for Patrons only

I'm going to be putting some studies in the secret choir only shop on my website this week. Starting with these two. Scumchoir.com/holyholyI've been working a lot on pieces for galleries, which is ultimately good, but even if they sell it takes too much time to actually get the money. For me galleries are more for showing the work to the public and that type of thing than for making money. They're more for the long game. But right now classes are mostly done for summer so I'm not making much money that way, events are only a fe...

This week’s Grotesques!

I’ve been busy the last 2 days! I was doing this event in Long Beach called “taste of downtown.” I also have this deadline for a painting tomorrow (which really means today because I have to get a picture of it.) and in between I just had work and life stuff to take care of too.But here’s some of the grotesques I did, I did the first ever family portrait! I was proud of that.Happy June 14th everybodyHave funGoodnight sweeties

Mythos Submissions

Featured piece by Lulu @biblicallyaccurateboygirl"requiem collectors: creatures that lives in memories. they don’t harm you, they help keep things neat up there. you can see them sometimes but their form is effected by whatever emotions are connected to the memory. some like to eat nostalgia, loneliness, anticipation, or passion. i found this one snacking on some excess hopelessness left over from my time in college. i don’t mind, its not like i was using it anyway. so next time ur reminiscing, keep an eye out for one of these guys.&#34...

Grotesques from the opening last night

Bacon is Nathan's dog. Kind of the mascot of the hive. Here's some of the portraits I did.Bacon even posed next to me painting for a picture. For choir ears only: To be honest, the show went...It went. There was just a weird energy. There was nothing wrong with the show itself. People seemed to be having a good time. It was a party. It was a party. And I don't know if I was just extra misanthropic. Or if it was just the temperature getting hotter. If I believed in astrology I'm sure I'd blame it on that. But something just felt ...

Grotesques from Thursday night

Kind of a slow night. About to head to the gallery for the opening. Hopefully I get some more customers.

Trxtr Wxrld sneak preview

My show "Trxtr Wxrld" opens tomorrow. I hung most of it on Wednesday, a little yesterday. there's a few pieces still missing from this but this is the gist. I'm not familiar with all the titles of these so I'll just tag the artists. Go to the Hive's website for more info about theses piecesThis is a guitar case that I've had since high school about 10 years ago I started painting something on it and abandoned it. My friend Jesse Jacobellis likes to paint on found/repurposed objects so I passed it along to him and he ...

New painting in the works

I liked the still life-ness of the “oldest trick” piece I did. I’m trying to get a new 12x12” piece done for this group show at a gallery I really want to be in. I did this study all from imagination using the Zorn pallet (black, red, yellow ochre, white) and added a little ultramarine blue to the mix and transparent red iron oxide as a “cheat color” between red and yellow ochre.I started sculpting the maquette after I got home from the gallery last night. I’m trying out translucent clay rather than the usual gray.I haven’t been...

Scum Choir post Hangin from patreon

Hangin

Went to hang the show today. Didn’t get the best pictures. I don’t really like hanging shows. I’m not good at it. I’ll just put everything wherever it fits and whatever. So I had my friends Nathan and Frankie help me a lot.The above picture is a sign my friend Tamir is making for the show. It’s amazing.I’ll take better pictures of the individual pieces tomorrow probably.Have fun Goodnight Sweeties

Study of Reynard and a urinal

I started this as a study before I did the other two pieces for the trickster show. So I did another pass on it while I was waiting for varnish to dry. All 3 pieces are ready and tomorrow I’m going over to the gallery to hang the show

Scum Choir post Oldest Trick in the Book from patreon

Oldest Trick in the Book

Finally got some useable photos after like 12 hours of shooting. Here's some stuff about the things. So in the bottom right, we have a scattering of trash. The trickster is a god of trash. The trickster often hides sacred objects in trash or uses trash to undermine sacred objects. The wood table that all this stuff sits on was actually based on an old altar. Sacred garbage. The trash is food wrappers and napkins. The trickster is a god of perpetual appetite. Often trickster is figuring out how to satisfy his appetite only to get himself into a...

Scum Choir post Framer's Brain from patreon

Framer's Brain

Today was a framing day.I varnished "oldest trick" and it's drying outside in a box.I accidentally killed a spider. I prefer to catch and release spiders. Especially with all this trickster stuff on my mind lately. I think of spiders as little Anansi's running around. But this one just got too close to this little crevice and if he got in there he'd just be living in my room and I didn't want that. so I moved too quick and squashed him.In any case, after varnishing "oldest trick," I tried to put "cave shenanig...

Just when I think I'm out, they pull me back in

So I finished all that photography stuff yesterday, started varnishing "oldest trick," then I went to start editing the photos of the "cave shenanigans" piece. I scanned this one about a week ago and when I opened it to start editing it I noticed that awful line on the right hand side.So annoying. The painting is already varnished so I can't scan it again. I don't want to set the camera back up to take a picture. So...went through pixel by pixel to get rid of it. It never ends! but who am I to complain.I think I got it...

Scum Choir post Getting ready for the show from patreon

Getting ready for the show

Trying to get a good picture of this one. I hate taking pictures. I had to watch YouTube tutorials about aperature, shutter speed, iso and all that. Then I just spent all day adjusting all that stuff, changing the lighting, moving the camera. All day except for a little detour I took attempting to put the other one into a floater frame. Which I also couldn’t seem to figure out. So I watched YouTube tutorials about that. And still couldn’t figure it out.So just a day of making messes and figuring stuff out.Taking a break now and I’ll probab...

That feeling when you know you’re about to stay up to finish a painting

Just about done. Really just needs a signature. I like to save that part though. “The oldest trick in the book” 16x20 on panel. Awaiting a very fine frame I picked out for it.Despite writing “happy (whatever the date is)” on every single post, I had no idea it was this late in May. In the words of Zach Galifianakis while being reprimanded for spending all their money on weed rather than gas and food to get home in the movie Due Date: “I don’t think in those terms.”But, alas, this late date means I’m going to have to try and pho...

Scum Choir post Pancake day from patreon

Pancake day

It’s hard to photograph this piece because it’s dark and glossy. I don’t know how I’m actually going to photograph it for prints and stuff. But I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it. I had to use a 3D modeling program to see how an actual plate would look in this position. I put a simple cylinder on it to see the lighting. Then I put some magpies and leaves on the plate. That’s a reference to the thieving magpie which is kind of a trickster story. There’s also references to other trickster references in it I guess I’ll point t...

Scum Choir post Getting in there from patreon

Getting in there

I’m trying to paint this in three sections basically. From right to left. Here’s what I spent most of today looking at.The far right thing is a Napkin crumpled up. Looks like a poop. I like that. It also kind of looks like a pine cone. I’m indifferent to that. Last night I watched an episode of Madmen called “the Suitcase.” It’s probably my favorite episode of that series. It takes place on May 25th so I rewatch it every year on or around that day. The madmen theme brings me back to living in Reno and working as…I don’t even kno...
