OUTSIDER'S SKY: Page 4 (old comic)
Meet the main character. if you can't tell i really like lizards.
OUTSIDER'S SKY: Page 3 (old comic)
The page- the way the buildings look, the colors, the aesthetic- pretty much inspired the rest of the comic. It got drawn ~6 months before everything else.

OUTSIDER'S SKY: Page 2 (old comic)
Here's the map I did for Outsider's Sky. The world here was darker and colder than The Shell, both figuratively and literally. Silas was some kind of republic, Harran was this antagonistic demarchy thing, and the polity at the top was a holdover of "the precursors" who still inhabited their ancient settlements but lost the knowledge to build and repair most of their technology. You might recognize some names here. it's not because this is the same world as The Shell... It's because I'm shameless and like to steal cool...
A lizard from the middle of nowhere
A lizard from Ketta, a settlement at the very edge of The Shell. Other than a few ancient structures, Ketta is surrounded by nothing but ocean and miles and miles of grey, featureless plains. Though an attractive location for researchers, it's also infamous as a place where the Federal Government sends it's dissenters and ner-do-wells. It's hard to sow discord when you're at a post thousands of miles from anyone or anything important.
lizard clothes!
Left guy is from Tethys, right guy is from the fundamentalist northern cities.
OUTSIDER'S SKY: Page 1 (old comic)
Outsider's Sky was my first real attempt at a long-format comic project. While technically not The Shell, the world of this comic is a kind of proto-Shell. It has a lot of the same elements: lizards, airships, monolithic stone towers, etc etc. This is old, from high school, and a little bit embarrassing in parts, so please reserve your judgement.I actually have 28+ pages of this thing to post, which I'll be doing in the coming months. weeks.

style test 10
This one is cool, especially the first panel. I still love me some moody-looking lizards with firearms.

this is very much not from The Shell but it's cute and I want to share it with you
style test 7
now with shitty writing! questionable dialogue aside, I really like this one. The stylization came out neat. That said why in the world would I name a lizard charlie. It's not a very lizard kind of name...
style test 6
This one was very, very Nausica and the Valley of the Wind. Sentient fungus escapes containment and wreaks havoc... Not my most original idea. That said, the style was interesting. This is pencil, colored digitally, with a faux bokeh blur effect applied to the background.
style test 5
I think this is my favorite of these style tests. stylish and appropriately moody. And it even has a lizard drawn from an angle besides /directly to the side/. Innovative.
style experiments 4
look at those old, fucky lizards. This one never got anywhere.
poor lizard ):
Don't engage with ancient tech without heavier equipment!I was practicing atmosphere and dynamic poses.
style experiments 3
now for something completely different...I gotta admit, I still think this color scheme is rad. Look at that gradient in the sky. And that first panel? Perfect. Also notice that proto-lizard has a gold ring? I've been drawing them with gold rings since long before I had Family Culture figured out. tbh I think family culture was /inspired/ by trying to come up with an explanation for the gold rings.
style experiments 2
More graphite. You can see some recruitment posters in the first panel- I was thinking of having a character join the military.
Practice lab safety hatchlings
Universities are uncommon throughout The Shell. Usually, it's your family's responsibility to educate you, from early elementary through 'college.' Specialized education usually means being sent to study with some family that specializes in whatever you want to learn. Wanna study physics? We'll send you off to study with Tethys, they have that one guy who's really good with physics.Universities /do/ exist, but sporadically, and mostly patronized by nameless lizards- it's a big taboo for family lizards to attend them!...
Fauna of The Shell
An incomplete list of creatures you might find in the The Shell!
