Tonatiuh is the sun deity of the Nahuas. More specifically, he is the current sun in Nahua cosmology. The Nahua believed that the world had been created multiple times (four or five times depending on accounts). Tonatiuh is the last and current one. At the time, the Persian Empire controlled the Greek cities in Anatolia, including Halicarnassus and Ephesus. After the Persian War, many Greeks traveled to Persia and settled there as mercenaries, guardsmen, physicians, and satraps. Xenophon of Athens, who served the Achaemenid prince Cyrus the Younger, is a well-known example of such mercenaries.
